Why Sri Lanka Is Missing from the 2025 Champions Trophy

Sri Lanka is one of the four full member nations that will not feature in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, and their absence from the prestigious tournament has raised several questions. The Champions Trophy 2025, set to be played in Pakistan, will see participation from the top seven teams based on their performance in the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, as well as the host nation, Pakistan, who automatically qualified.

The seven teams that qualified for the 2025 Champions Trophy through the 2023 World Cup are Australia, India, South Africa, New Zealand, Afghanistan, England, and Bangladesh. While these teams made the cut, Sri Lanka was narrowly edged out by Bangladesh for the final qualification spot.

One of the key reasons for Sri Lanka’s exclusion is their disappointing Net Run Rate (NRR) from the 2023 World Cup. Sri Lanka finished with a negative NRR of -1.419, which ultimately cost them a spot in the Champions Trophy. In contrast, Bangladesh, despite their NRR of -1.087, managed to secure the final spot, while the Netherlands, with an even worse NRR of -1.825, also missed out on qualification.

Sri Lanka’s exclusion from the Champions Trophy 2025 can be attributed to their inconsistent performances in recent years. While they have been a dominant force in world cricket historically, their recent record in global tournaments has been less than impressive. Their inability to secure vital wins and their fluctuating performances in the 2023 World Cup meant they failed to qualify based on the qualification criteria set for the Champions Trophy.

Bangladesh’s narrow qualification, despite having a less favorable NRR, highlights the thin margin of error in international cricket when it comes to qualification for major tournaments. With the quality of teams improving globally, every match in the World Cup can make or break a team’s chance for qualification.

Sri Lanka, having been a part of the Champions Trophy in the past, will surely be disappointed by their absence from this edition of the tournament. Their inability to qualify serves as a reminder of the growing competition in world cricket, where even traditional cricketing powers must maintain consistency to secure their place among the elite. However, Sri Lanka will now turn their attention to future tournaments and the rebuilding of their team to ensure they can once again compete at the highest level.
