Over 32,000 Vacancies in J&K Govt Departments, Health Department Tops the List

More than 32,000 posts remain vacant across 37 departments in the Jammu and Kashmir government, with the health and medical education sector accounting for the largest share of 7,851 vacancies, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah revealed on Tuesday.

In a statement to the Assembly, Abdullah, who also holds the General Administration Department portfolio, explained that the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB) and the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) were tasked with filling 3,727 of these vacancies since the formation of the government on October 16 last year.

The data, provided in response to a query from Peoples Conference MLA Sajad Gani Lone, showed that as of January 31, 32,474 posts were vacant. This includes 2,503 gazetted positions, 19,214 non-gazetted positions, and 10,757 multi-tasking staff (MTS) vacancies.

Out of the total vacancies, 738 gazetted posts, 1,754 non-gazetted posts, and 1,235 MTS positions were referred to JKSSB and JKPSC following the formation of the current government. Among the key departments with significant vacancies are the Health and Medical Education Department (7,851 vacancies), Public Works (Roads and Buildings) Department (3,759), Animal Husbandry (2,589), and Industries and Commerce (2,517).

Other departments with notable vacancies include Housing and Urban Development (2,420), Agriculture Production and Farmers Welfare (1,340), Power (1,305), Food and Supplies (1,131), Finance (1,009), Revenue (1,004), and Jal Shakti (856). The School Education Department also faces a shortfall of 770 posts.

The only department without any vacancies is the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction.

In another response, the Chief Minister disclosed that JKPSC had collected over Rs 8.44 crore and JKSSB over Rs 5.72 crore in application fees since October 16 last year. However, he confirmed that there is currently no proposal under consideration to make job application forms free for candidates.
