J&K has a health institution for every 3500 souls: Govt

The Jammu and Kashmir government informed the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday that the region boasts a health institution for every 3,500 people, significantly better than the national average of one health institution for every 6,000 people.

In response to an unstarred question by MLA Reyaz Ahmed Khan, Health and Medical Education Minister Sakeena Masood Itto shared that this information is based on a report from the Union Ministry of Health & Medical Education.

The Minister also highlighted that Jammu and Kashmir currently operates 554 New Type Primary Health Centers (NTPHCs), with 523 of these centers having been upgraded into Health & Wellness Centers as part of a flagship scheme initiated by the Government of India.

Regarding future health infrastructure plans, Minister Itto confirmed that there are no current proposals for the creation or upgradation of additional health centers. However, she stated that such plans may be reconsidered once the austerity measures imposed by the Finance Department are lifted and any critical gaps identified by the Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) are assessed.
